The annual fundraising event has been running since 1998 across major cities and regional areas of Australia. In 2014, the Mother’s Day Classic will be held in all capitol cities and in 65 regional areas around Australia. Since the Mother’s Day Classic started it has raised $19.8 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, who have distributed these funds into research grants in each state.
The Mornington Peninsula event provides an assortment of family-friendly activities for the whole community to enjoy. This is the first Mornington Peninsula event and it is expected to attract over 500 participants in 2014 along with many more spectators to help cheer from the sidelines and immerse themselves in community spirit. The goal for 2015 and beyond is to continue, and expand to become a major event on the Mornington Peninsula.
The Mother’s Day Classic is Australia’s largest breast cancer research fundraiser. With more than 135,000 participants in the 2013 event a record $5 million was raised making the Mother’s Day Classic Australia’s largest funder of National Breast Cancer Foundation research.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer amoung women in Australia. One in eight Australian women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. On average, seven women die from breast cancer in this country every day. By 2020, it is projected the 17,210 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Australia. Since the intiation of the event in 1998, 5 year survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer have been increasing, and now stand at 89% of those diagnosed.
Improvements in survival are attributed to earlier detection of breast cancer and improved treatment outcomes, which is why research is so vital.
