We're proud to welcome Melbourne dancer, choreographer and PhD scholar Victoria Chiu as our next Artist in Residence, presenting Moving with 637m Depth as part of her week-long residency exploring the quiet conversation between body and water
Through somatic movement, both in and out of the water, Victoria researches moments of relational choreography inspired by our ancient thermal waters, drawn from 637 metres beneath the earth's surface, inviting the body to find whatever rest, healing or connection it needs.
The residency culminates in a shared group experience on the Bath House Amphitheatre stage and pools on Saturday 29 August from 5pm, an open invitation to return to your moving body, with nature as your equal. In a world increasingly lived through screens, it's a grounding reminder that our bodies matter, our connection to the non-human world matters, and we feel healthier when we find these deeper connections.
Participants move as they choose, in the water and/or out of it, inspired by the journey of the water and surrounding land; breathing, sensing, and finding energetic connection with themselves, each other and the place they're in.
Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Roland Cox joins Victoria, weaving a live, improvised score through the experience and building to a grand finale: Victoria and Roland bring movement and physical connection to Seek The Heat, a multi-media, improvisational piece across seven frequencies and layers of sound, colour and chakra, with projected imagery by local visual artist Indigo Roydhouse.

About our performer
Victoria Chiu trained at the VCA, Melbourne, and recently completed her PhD researching choreoethics through digital dancescapes. Her practice explores the body in relation to histories of self, people and place, working at the intersections of dance, screen and technology.
Chiu has collaborated, performed and toured extensively across Europe, Australia, Singapore, China and New Zealand, working with companies and artists including Cie Gilles Jobin, Micha Purucker, Cie Nomades, RDYSTDY, Kristina Chan, Carol Brown, Gabrielle Nankivell, Bernadette Walong and Australian Dance Theatre, among many others.
Collectively, her choreographic works, including Do You Speak Chinese?, Fire Monkey, What Happened In Shanghai, Soursweet, Genetrix, Floored, Grotto, Viral and The Ballad of Herbie Cox, have been presented in Europe, North America, China and Australia. In 2021, Victoria and RDYSTDY won the Green Room Award for Best Digital Dance for Soursweet. Since 2023, she has served as Co-Chair of the Green Room Dance Panel.
