Synthesis Organics is one of two exquisite skincare ranges used in facials and other holistic treatments at Peninsula Hot Springs. With their approach of harnessing “the alchemy of nature, science and spirit”, Synthesis has a story and philosophy that runs deeper than most skincare brands.

Over a decade ago, Theme Rains, founder of Synthesis Organics, took her background in energy medicine, studied product formulation and began creating natural skincare and aromatherapy products.

“At that time a lot of therapists were using products that not only weren’t organic and natural, but might be unethically sourced,” she says.

The result was a skincare collection that was among the first certified organics in Australia.

Synthesis uses natural, organic ingredients combined with the principles of bioenergetics (the flow of energy through living systems) – a combination that aligns perfectly with the vision and values of Peninsula Hot Springs. As such, the spa team at Peninsula Hot Springs began using Synthesis Organics.

“It indicates how important values are, that Synthesis was chosen despite not being well-known at the time,” says Theme. “We rolled out everything from facials to body treatments; we developed some signature essential oil blends to use in the massages at Peninsula Hot Springs. That’s how it all began.”

So-called because of its connection to plant medicine, Synthesis Organics describes products infused with life – and a philosophy that beauty comes from a deep, holistic sense of wellbeing.

“When we are in harmony, in body, mind and spirit, and with nature, there’s a radiance that appears,” says Theme. “That radiance is what we call true beauty. And it’s unique to every individual, it’s undeniable that it’s there, and it’s ageless. That’s our philosophy of beauty and wellness.”

Synthesis Organics has a library of over 150 ingredients, including Australian natives such as Kakadu Plum, Davidson Plum, Quandong and Fragonia.

“Australian natives contain incredible levels of Vitamin C as well as other antioxidants and natural AHAs and BHAs, which help the skin renew itself. I’m just constantly in awe of what our native ingredients can deliver for the skin and our overall resilience,” says Theme.

Fragonia, one of Theme’s favourite plants to work with, is a recent botanical discovery in Australia.

“It has the most remarkable powers of harmonisation and balance. Clinical research suggests it’s also incredibly beneficial for the respiratory system,” she says.

The ingredients in Synthesis Organics products are extracted from their original state using a variety of methods that keep their nutrients intact – including steam distillation, cellular extraction, spagyric processes and infusions.

For an extra layer of potency, Synthesis Organics use their own unique Energy Imbued process, which guarantees the energetic integrity of the plants. This involves a daily energy-balancing ritual for Synthesis staff members, and wrapping products in sustainable packaging. Each bottle is also given a symbol that essentially seals in this subtle positive energy so it remains protected wherever the product travels.

When it comes to her personal favourite products, Theme says she has three that she uses “no matter what.”

“The first is the Renew Enzyme Cleanser, which has an exfoliating effect, but it does it through enzymes, which only chew through dead skin cells, not live skin cells. And the aroma in it is particularly uplifting and balancing, so I just love using that at the beginning of the day.”

Then there’s the bestselling Notox Ageless Glow Serum, which is brimming with bio-actives to lift, firm and smooth the skin.

Theme’s “all-time favourite”, though, is the Replenish Elixir.

“It’s like liquid gold,” she says. “It’s a facial oil but we call it an elixir because it has 18 different actives in every drop. We call it collagen alchemy because it supports your skin to produce collagen. It gives you an incredible glow and firmness and freshness. The aroma alone just really helps put you into a really beautiful, calm, centred space.

“I talk about aromas a lot because I feel like it’s such a big part of the experience. And aromatherapy obviously works on our hormone system, our nervous system – it’s an incredibly powerful modality to reduce stress, as well as smelling wonderful.”

Energy medicine – for example, acupuncture, Reiki and qi gong – is gaining in popularity, and has been woven into the fabric of Synthesis since its inception.

“It's at the basis of all the great healing traditions before modern medicine,” explains Theme. “It’s that awareness that the open secret to longevity and wellness depends on life force energy through our body and being.

“At Synthesis, we address the physical components of the skin’s needs, and muscle stiffness and all of that – but we also address the energetic needs.”

‘Bioenergetics’ is what’s at play when skincare and self-care products meet human touch and intention.

“We need the healing touch of the therapist – that activates it,” says Theme. “Or your own loving touch when you’re applying it yourself. We teach people to apply with consciousness, with loving touch, with the breath. That really amplifies the benefits.”
